On May 26, 2011, Jobs for the Future and partner PHI convened stakeholders in direct care to discuss best-in-class models for developing the direct-care workforce and raising the quality of caregiving jobs—“Build the ladder and raise the floor.” Speakers and participants included providers of direct care and their associations; federal policy makers and administrators; consumer advocates; labor; and workforce development experts.
The goals of the meeting were to:
- Address innovations in both practice and policy for identifying career advancement opportunities (“building the ladder”) while improving the quality of direct-care jobs (“raising the floor”).
- Engage all stakeholders in the direct-care workforce in dialogue with one another and with national leaders.
- Identify opportunities to support advancement and improve job quality, and articulate a common action agenda to realize these goals.
